Pupil, Sports and Recovery Premiums

PE and Sport Premium

The Primary PE and Sport Premium is designed to help children get an active start in life by improving the quality of PE and sports in primary schools; this is part of the Government’s commitment to improve access to sport for everyone.

We use our PE and Sport Premium allocation to make additional and sustainable improvements to the PE, sport and physical activity we provide, such as:

  • funding high-quality PE and sport for at least 2 hours a week (over and above the requirements of the National Curriculum)
  • offering a wide range of extracurricular sport and competitive opportunities
  • providing or improving equal access to sport for boys and girls

Competent Swimmers

At Greenways Primary Academy, we believe that swimming is an essential life skill, which we actively promote and celebrate in whole school assemblies.

The children start swimming lessons, including water confidence, when they start year 3.  This continues into years 4, 5 & 6 where they will have swimming lessons for a full term, for 30 minutes a week, as part of their PE provision.

Those pupils who have not reached the 25m expectation by the time they start year 6 will have additional swimming lessons during the summer term to give them the opportunity to consolidate the skills needed to achieve 25m.

Once children have achieved 25m in KS2, these competent swimmers are provided with additional lessons to extend their skills past 25m and achieve higher-level awards such as Bronze, Silver and Gold badges.

Any children who have already achieved such badges are taught competitive swimming techniques and circuit training to improve their fitness. We enter our strongest swimmers from years 4, 5 & 6 in an annual swimming gala where they compete competitively against other schools in the county.

At Greenways Primary Academy, we use some of the PE and Sport Premium funding to extend the children’s swimming ability past 25m.

Water safety is taught in all classes on an annual basis plus through whole school assemblies and PHSE.

Pupils in Y6 who have met the National Curriculum requirements.
