Early Reading & Phonics

At Greenways, we follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics programme. We take a ‘Phonics First, Phonics Fast’ approach because we know that secure letter and word recognition is essential for early reading success. It also provides children with the foundations to access and enjoy the wider curriculum with confidence.

We are committed to working closely with families to ensure every child becomes a confident, fluent reader.

How We Teach Phonics

We teach phonics daily, following a clear progression that starts in Reception and continues into Year 1 and beyond as needed. Our approach ensures children:

• Learn new sounds and tricky words systematically

• Practise blending sounds to read words and sentences

• Build fluency through regular reading practice in school and at home

Supporting Reading at Home

We want you to feel confident helping your child with phonics and reading at home. The resources linked below include:
