Computing

Computing is a core part of the primary curriculum at Greenways. We believe it is essential that all children develop the skills, knowledge, and understanding to navigate an ever-changing digital world and to thrive in their future education and careers.

Our computing curriculum is carefully designed to link with other key subjects such as mathematics, science, and design technology. Pupils learn how computer systems work and gain hands-on experience in designing, programming, and evaluating digital solutions.

The curriculum is structured around three key strands:

  • Information Technology – including word processing, creating presentations, and handling data.

  • Computer Science – including coding, programming, and understanding how networks and systems operate.

  • Digital Literacy – including using technology safely, responsibly, and respectfully, and developing an awareness of online content and digital footprints.

Children at Greenways begin exploring computing from the Early Years and continue to build on these foundations throughout Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. By the time they leave Year 6, they will have a broad range of computing experiences and skills.

Online Safety

Online safety is embedded throughout our curriculum. We teach children how to use technology responsibly and safely, and to understand how their actions impact themselves and others. This includes:

  • Managing their digital footprint

  • Understanding how to evaluate online information

  • Recognising risks and knowing where to seek help

Our approach supports the school’s wider safeguarding policies and is in line with current government guidance, including Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) and the Education for a Connected World framework.

To make sure that all children at Greenways feel safe when using the internet, we have used a video in our assembly to show us ways in which we can be SMART when working online.
